About Madness: Playwrights Production Class, affectionately known as Midnight Madness, is part of the practical-based portion of the MFA playwriting program consisting of a weekly, informal production of new work. It begins early in the week with a different writer of the program selecting a theme, style, or concept for the upcoming production. Each writer must then write a three to five minute play based upon that theme, style or concept. (Madness is unlike Saturday Night Live in that these are truly plays being performed rather than skits with punchlines. Many of the pieces are comedies, but the comedy springs from a different source than sketch comedy.) Each play is written, cast, and rehearsed throughout the week in preparation for the Friday night, script-in-hand production presented before an enthusiastic audience.  Students in the MFA Playwriting Program take the course every quarter while in residence at Ohio University.
